Create a script with Kevin Dyer

Do you want to be part of a team of eight St Helens writers who will work with playwright Kevin Dyer to write a collectively written play?

It is an opportunity to learn more about playwriting, and to collaborate with others to go from first ideas to finished script.

There will be 8 three-hour sessions - and some writing to do at home.    Heads up: you will need to commit to all of these sessions.

There is no payment for this, but what you will get is 8 free sessions on the craft of writing a play. (By the way,  Kevin has had over 50 plays commissioned and produced. He won the Writers Guild Award for 'Best Play' with 'The Syrian Baker' and his adaptation of 'The Hobbit' won UK Theatre's Best Play Award. He is the Arts in Libraries Creative Writing Tutor and Creative Lead for Storm in the North Theatre.)

We don't know what the play is about yet (that will be for the group to work out).   After the eight sessions we will have created a script which a local group of actors will spend a weekend working on before a public reading of what we have created.

Interested? You will need to commit to the 8 sessions, be able to write at home in-between the sessions, and be free for the reading on March 29th.

For the project to work, you will need to offer your time, your creativity, your willingness to contribute and to learn. You do not need to have written drama before, but you need to have a strong interest in doing so.

NB you do not need to have written a play before... but we hope that after this project you are in a great position to go and write your next/first play.

The sessions will be at Thatto Heath library on Saturdays, 2-5pm on the following dates:

  • Jan 10, 17, 24, 31
  • Feb 7, 21, 28
  • Mar 7

Proposed date for the reading: March 29th at 6pm.

If you want to be considered, fill in the form HERE saying in 75 words why this project would be a good fit for you. (They will be a selection process to find the eight.)

Deadline: 11 December 2025. 12PM.
