Creativity rooted in Place. Connected Across the Region.

The Arts in Libraries x Independents Biennial 2025 is an exhibition of new work by artists from St Helens Borough and across the Liverpool City Region — part of Independents Biennial 2025; the city region's artist-led celebration of independent creativity.

Presented here at The Godfrey Pilkington Gallery in The World of Glass, this exhibition brings together six original Arts in Libraries Creative Commissions in dialogue with work from artists across the region, including the Independents Biennial commission New Age Memorial Service by Jacques Verkade & Callan Waldron-Hall.

In the true spirit and shared ethos of both St Helens - Arts in Libraries & Independents Biennial - exhibited works are not presented here under a collective theme; each exists on its own terms - inviting dialogue around the unique places & people of St Helens, and their interconnectedness with the wider regional creative ecosystem. Here, photography sits alongside textile, illustration meets digital art, and diorama crosses paths with mixed media installation. Without a single guiding theme, these works invite fresh ways of seeing — creating space for contrast, conversation and unexpected connection across disciplines and perspectives.

This exhibition is a celebration of the long-standing partnership between St Helens - Arts in Libraries and the Independents Biennial — united in amplifying the unique voices and visions of our region's artists.

The Independents Biennial, celebrating the art and artists living and working in Liverpool city-region, opens to the public on Saturday 7 June, with a special, free to attend launch on Thursday 5 June in Port Sunlight showcasing a range of art venues and artists in the historic village. Learn More about the Independents Biennial events - Home - Independents Biennial.
